Gardaí to oppose release for Dundons

SENIOR gardaí will object to any compassionate release sought by members of the McCarthy Dundon gang for the funeral of their mother who died in a road collision in London, it has emerged.

Anne Dundon (nee McCarthy) died after being hit by a 4x4 at the weekend.

Her husband Kenny Dundon recently completed a prison sentence for manslaughter.

Their sons, Wayne, John, Dessie and Gerard, are all behind bars in this country.

* Dessie, 28, was jailed for life in 2003 with four others for the gangland murder of rival gang boss, Kieran Keane. His cousin Noddy McCarthy was also one of the five convicted of the Keane murder.

All five were found guilty on the evidence of Owen Treacy who survived 17 stab wounds and was left for dead alongside the body of his cousin Kieran Keane.

* Gerard, 23, is doing five years for violent disorder and extortion.

* Wayne and John are in custody awaiting trial.

The family are understood to be making arrangements to have Anne McCarthy-Dundon’s body brought back to Limerick for burial alongside her father, John ‘The Man’ McCarthy.

Her mother, Nancy, is still alive.

The Dundon brothers returned to Limerick about 20 years ago and, since then, have been at the centre of feuding gang warfare in the city. The feud has reportedly claimed up to 25 lives since the murder of Eddie Ryan in the Moose bar in November 2000.

Anne McCarthy-Dundon is aunt of Larry McCarthy Jnr, 33, who returned to Limerick earlier this year after serving a sentence of five and a half years for handling guns.

On learning of Anne McCarthy-Dundon’s death, Limerick gardaí are understood to have been in contact with the Department of Justice. It is believed they do not want any of the Dundon brothers allowed out of prison to attend their mother’s funeral.
