THE Coalition’s ability to unite behind tough economic decisions was thrown into question last night as a minor budget cut triggered the first Cabinet resignation.

Housing Minister Willie Penrose quit over plans to close the army barracks in his Mullingar heartland, rubbishing claims by the Taoiseach that the move would save money.

With the nation braced for a budget loaded with €3.8 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes, the Cabinet walkout is a major embarrassment for Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, who had provoked anger in some Labour ranks by promoting Mr Penrose to the “super-junior” post in March.
