Who cares? The Republic of Ireland all- but booked their place at next summer’s European Championships in Poland and Ukraine with a 4-0 victory in the first leg of their play-off against Es-tonia in Tallinn last night.

Like the invaders from Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Russia and Poland in centuries past, the Irish found the locals ripe for the picking even if the margin of defeat was harsh and Estonia finished with just nine men.
