Gang attacks motorist in Ballincollig
The man’s wife watched in horror as her husband became the victim of what appears to have been an unprovoked attack.
According to gardaí the man was driving through an estate in a Cork suburb when the attack took place.
Superintendent Con Cadogan, who is leading the garda investigation, said that the man was driving through Innishmore Estate in Ballincollig when he stopped at a junction.
A number of males in their late teens were at the junction and one of them proceeded to open the car door and punch the driver in the face.
A second youth then smashed a bottle on the back of the man’s head.
“He had to get seven stitches as a result of that,” Supt Cadogan said.
Gardaí in Ballincollig are seeking witnesses to the attack which happened at approximately 7.15pm on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, they are also appealing for information about another incident in the suburb which happened later the same night.
Superintendent Cadogan said that three young women were sitting in a car at Glendower Court when a man approached them and asked for a lift.
When they refused the man is alleged to have threatened them in such an aggressive manner that they got out of the car.
The women claim that the man then sped off in the vehicle before crashing it into a number of parked cars a short distance away before fleeing the scene.
“The women were in a blue Opel Corsa and we are anxious to hear from anybody who saw them in the car and from anybody in particular who saw the man getting into it, driving it away and crashing into the other vehicles,” Superintendent Cadogan said.
The incident is said to have occurred at around 9.20pm.
Anybody with information on either of the incidents is asked to contact Ballincollig garda station at (021) 4871222.
