LAST year, Fine Gael turned up its nose at the Fianna Fáil-led government’s plans to give free cheese to the deprived, as if the idea stank worse than a well-aged stilton.

When the announcement was made, Fine Gael’s then agriculture spokesman, Andrew Doyle, was not impressed.

“Fianna Fáil and the Greens gouda be kidding,” he was quoted as saying. “People on the breadline would rather the Government’s unfeta’d attention was on solving the economic crisis they caused and providing jobs rather than on this ridiculous announcement.”
