Uncertainty still looms over effects of austerity

CONSUMERS are facing higher VAT charges on a range of goods and services, as well as increased motor and home heating fuel costs in next month’s budget.

However, there are unlikely to be any significant changes to income tax rates, credits and bands.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan yesterday gave a broad outline of changes to be expected in the budget on December 6 as the Government confirmed it will be seeking a €3.8 billion adjustment in next year’s budget. He predicted the budget would be seen as “tough but fair.”
