A CIRCUIT Court judge had no jurisdiction to order two national newspapers to pay costs of the collapsed Paschal Carmody trial.

That is the view of the Irish Examiner and The Irish Times, which are facing a potential bill of over €540,000 from the collapsed trial after Judge Donagh McDonagh ordered in June that they should pay the costs of the trial.

At Ennis Circuit Court yesterday, legal representatives of the two newspapers confirmed that they are to seek a High Court judicial review of Judge McDonagh’s ruling on the costs.
