Garda ‘made ultimate sacrifice’ to save others

GAA and Garda chiefs heaped praise yesterday on a courageous young garda who died after he placed the safety of others over his own.

Garda Ciaran Jones was washed away from a rural bridge in Co Wicklow on Monday night as he went to warn motorists about the overflowing river at Ballysmuttan Bridge.

The community at Manor Kilbride, where the garda lived, joined gardaí, army and rescue workers in a major search on Monday night.
