Redesigned driving licences to be issued

NEW, plastic, credit-card type driving licences will replace old-style paper versions from next year in a move which will also enable gardaí to improve detection of motoring offences.

The new driving licences will contain a microchip which will hold information about a driver, including their name, address, date of birth and licence type.

It will also contain other important records, such as details of any penalty points and endorsements on a driver’s record.
