Smart meter plan could get approval by end of year

PLANS for the roll out of smart meters for electricity and natural gas to households around the country are likely to be given formal approval by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) before the end of the year.

It follow the completion of successful trials on smart meters for both types of energy over an 18-month period.

The CER said the installation of smart meters in households could result in lower bills for consumers as well as lower carbon emissions and cost savings for energy providers.
