Canadian accused of assault allowed return to studies

A 23-YEAR-old Canadian student, accused of attacking and injuring a French doctor in Dublin’s Temple Bar, has been allowed to return on bail to his home in Quebec.

Mr Justice George Birmingham in the High Court yesterday granted Simon Mercier leave to return home to continue his studies while awaiting trial in Ireland for assault.

Mercier is accused of assault causing harm to French doctor Guillaume Osterstock, aged 26, in Temple Bar in the early hours of August 14. Mr Osterstock sustained a serious head injury and was treated in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, following the incident.
