THE chairman of the Oireachtas Public Accounts watchdog has said that heads of wasteful government departments should face financial penalties if public money is not used properly.

John McGuinness TD made the comments after a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) showed that within departments there may be a culture of “unaddressed underperformance”.

The C&AG report, published on Monday, outlined details of millions of euro of waste across various sectors and departments, from health and education to social protection and sport.
