ALMOST 40% of the population of Europe — 165 million people — suffer a mental or neurological disorder each year, a comprehensive study has revealed.

And with only about a third of cases receiving the therapy or medication needed, mental illnesses cause a huge economic and social burden — estimated at hundreds of billions of euro.

The study, published by the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, takes verified data from each country and looks at 27 illnesses across all ages ranging from depression and anxiety to insomnia or dementia, drug and alcohol abuse.
