The show (and garage) must go on

LIMERICK’S Belltable was turned into a noise chamber yesterday when a nearby garage disrupted it’s official reopening.

The show (and garage) must go on

Speeches by the theatre’s artistic director, Gerry Barnes, and Mayor of Limerick, Jim Long, were drowned out when a deafening noise erupted from a garage operated by Michael Daly at Daly’s Lane at the rear of the theatre.

Mr Daly has been at loggerheads with the theatre since renovation commenced two years ago, claiming his business was hurt by the €1.2 million development.

After a director of the theatre and a member of staff went to plead with Mr Daly, the noise ceased when Arts Minister Jimmy Deenihan began his speech.

Mr Daly denied setting out to disrupt yesterday’s ceremony.

“I am only doing what I have been doing for the past 40 years here in my garage.”

Belltable director Cian O’Carroll said the situation regarding Mr Daly’s garage was serious and needed to be sorted out.
