Expansion of discount retailers to create more than 2,000 jobs
Following success in England and Wales, recession-busting retail chain 99p Stores announced plans to open 50 shops in Ireland, employing up to 1,500 people over the next four years.
Its expansion into this country will begin with the opening of an outlet in Dublin’s Ilac centre on September 7 which will sell everything in-store for €1.50 or less. The group says it plans further “rapid” expansion in Ireland, and will announce more new stores over the coming months.
“This is yet further proof that consumer spending patterns have changed forever,” Gerry Loughran, director of €uro 50 Stores, part of the 99p Stores Group in Ireland.
“In the current climate in Ireland, consumers are looking for value for money.
“When they visit our stores they know that is exactly what they will get.
“As an Irishman myself, I am very proud to be opening up in Ireland and we are sure it will prove extremely popular.
“Everything in the store is capped at €1.50 or less. This takes the stress out of shopping.”
Meanwhile, Argos has announced that it will be seeking 800 workers to help out during the Christmas period.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to secure permanent roles at the retailer.

Elsewhere, German supermarket chain Aldi has said it plans to open six new stores before the end of 2011 as part of its expansion plans in the country.
The chain’s new outlets will be located in Sandyford, Dublin; Blessington, Wicklow; Clonee, Meath; Letterkenny, Donegal; Castleisland, Kerry; and Dunmanway, West Cork. The Sandyford location will open on 20 October this year, and will be the first of six stores to open its doors. The locations are expected to create 90 new jobs.
