Calls for whale tourist attraction

A SPERM whale washed up on a Waterford beach would make an ideal tourist attraction in the neighbouring town of Youghal because of it’s association with the film Moby Dick, according to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWGD).

Calls for whale tourist attraction

The group’s sightings co-ordinator Pádraig Whooley said he personally believed it was a “wasted opportunity” not to strip and mount the carcass and create a tourist attraction as happened in Kilbrittain, West Cork, two years ago, when a sperm whale was washed up in neighbouring Courtmacsherry Harbour.

“I know the decision is entirely up to Waterford County Council but I personally thing it’s a huge wasted opportunity not to make use of it. It’s a shame when you think that Youghal is just around the corner where Moby Dick, a tale about a sperm whale, was filmed.”
