AN assessment of the response by state agencies to severe weather conditions over the past two years has concluded that it was generally no more than “adequate” and “ad hoc” at best.

The report also highlights Ireland’s particular vulnerability to access of salt stocks during severe icy spells and advises homeowners and businesses to help themselves and not be overly reliant on government assistance.

The recommendations are contained in the Review of the Response to Exceptional Severe Weather Events Of 2009-2010 by the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management Task, under the auspices of the Department of Community and Local Government.
