THE health service will be over €400 million in debt at the end of this year and has been accused of being in the worst financial crisis in its history.

It is understood that during a three-hour meeting between all health service unions and senior HSE management, HSE finance director Liam Woods told unions that serious staff and service cutbacks must take place in order to address the surging costs.

He told senior representatives of the Irish Medical Organisation, Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), Irish Hospital Consultants Association, IMPACT and SIPTU the system was €179m over-budget for the first half of this year.
