Number caught speeding set to surge

THE number of motorists caught speeding is set to increase by almost 50% this year as a result of the roll-out of private speed cameras, while a new report shows that drink and drug-driving detections in Ireland remain among the highest in Europe.

Detection of speeding offences which incur penalty points is set to reach record levels in 2011 based on half-year figures supplied by the Department of Transport.

Latest records shows that 95,640 motorists incurred penalty points for speeding in the first six months of the year, compared to a total of 131,214 in all of 2010.
