PUBLIC sector workers have been reassured that their pay will be protected from any further cuts despite calls from business groups that more needs to be done to reduce the pay bill.

The Government said it would keep a promise made in the Croke Park Agreement not to impose further reductions to the wages of public sector workers as it seeks to accrue €3.6 billion in savings.

In a joint statement with the public service committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), it also hinted that the recruitment moratorium might be less restrictive in the future.
