THE National Roads Authority has said its offer to re-instate an iconic tourism landmark it stripped down in the Burren in controversial circumstances was turned down by Clare county council.

Spokesman with the National Roads Authority (NRA), Sean O’Neill, yesterday confirmed the NRA did offer to re-instate the commercial signs in the Co Clare village of Ballyvaughan.

However, he said the local authority — which has jurisdiction over what signs are allowed in 50km/h speed zones — turned down the offer.
