ONLY a few short months ago, Brian Lenihan ran for the leadership of Fianna Fáil, believing his illness would not prevent him from meeting the demands of the job.

Announcing his candidacy in January, he said he had “the energy and stamina to meet the physical and mental demands of the position”.
