Liam, 2, home after pioneering brain surgery

TWO-YEAR-OLD Liam Heffernan, who underwent pioneering brain surgery to help him overcome the fatal Batten disease, arrived back in Ireland yesterday — a week earlier than expected.

The rare disorder of the genetic system claimed the life of his only sibling, Saoirse, 5, earlier this year.

Liam’s grandfather, Michael Carey from Kenmare, said the family was delighted Liam was back.
