The head of the west of Ireland heart charity Croí said that the vandals could also have endangered lives by smashing the safety signs, which had been hired.

The signs were to be used for the 16th annual Tour de Lough Corrib cycle which takes place in Co Galway tomorrow, but a number of them were damaged on Wednesday night.

The signs were erected along the course of the race, which circles Lough Corrib.
