Search begins for Rose escorts
They don’t need the heart-throb looks of a Colin Farrell or a George Clooney, but essential qualifications include a liking for fun, a sense of humour and a “way” with the women.
The Rose of Tralee Festival is looking for young men to act as escorts for the lovely bunch of international Roses who will be vying for the prestigious 2011 title.
“The escorts are the 32 most envied men in Ireland every August,” says a convincing Colm Croffy, the festival’s escort co-ordinator.
He’s looking for gentlemen with a wicked sense of humour and who are well mannered, but with a touch of devilment. Above all, however, they must know how to treat a lady.
Those deemed suitable can secure a place at the Escorts Boot Camp Weekend.
“Once they have shown their mettle and proved their worth and stamina, the ultimate reward will be a week of fun in Tralee with the most charming and accomplished young women in Ireland — the 32 International Rose of Tralee contestants,” promises Colm, a former escort.
Reigning Escort of the Year Robbie Costelloe describes his two years as an escort as being the highlight of his life to date.
Of the 32 selected escorts, one will be chosen by the Roses as the Escort of the Year and win €1,000, a weekend break in any Carlton Hotel and other prizes.
Robbie Costelloe passes on five useful tips on how to be a winner:
* Smile! Guys would give their right arm to be in your shoes, so enjoy every minute.
* Good manners mean everything — James Bond knew how to treat a lady, learn from the master!
* Only tell jokes if you can.
* The clothes maketh the man — always be turned out the way your mum would expect.
* Listen! The most flattering thing you can give a woman is your undivided attention.
Once again, the escorts will take part in a fundraising campaign for the charity organisation 1Life Turn The Tide of Suicide.
