Two counties, two winners and two tickets add up to €14m Lotto mystery

TWO communities — in Cork and Cavan — are buzzing with speculation about the owners of two tickets which won just over €7 million each in the weekend Lotto draw.

Two counties, two winners and two tickets add up to €14m Lotto mystery

Both winners bought their tickets some time on Saturday and by 8pm had become multi-millionaires.

However, Michael Smith who owns the SuperValu store in Kinsale, Co Cork, was none the wiser about the identity of the winner yesterday.

“We are flabbergasted, I couldn’t believe it when the Lotto representative called me this morning.

“We’ve sold a few big scratch card winners over the years and we had a customer on Winning Streak recently but this is something else altogether,” said Mr Smith.

With the good weather bringing a lot of visitors and passing trade to Kinsale, and the increased interest for the year’s biggest jackpot to date, Mr Smith said there was no telling who it might be or even whether or not it was a local person who bought the €7m ticket.

The other ticket was sold in Kingscourt, Co Cavan, where Pádraig McCormack of Pat’s Stores on Main Street was hoping the winner was a local: “The priest was only joking at Mass last week that if anyone local wins the Lotto, he could do with a bit of help to put up a new roof on the church.”

The €6 ticket bought there included some lines of Quick Pick numbers but the winner, like the winner with the ticket bought in Cork, chose the winning numbers themselves.

The two Lotto agents who sold the winning tickets will also pick up €7,500 each for their part in the success.

While the combined €14,037,236 prize was the biggest so far this year, it is almost €5m less than the biggest jackpot in the game’s history, a €19m win for a Co Carlow syndicate in June 2008.

The latest winners become the 411th millionaires to be created since the Lotto games began in 1988.
