AN Irish backpacker had a lucky escape in Australia after a rugby league star rescued her just before she was swept out to sea by a dangerous riptide.

The female backpacker was saved by Australian National Rugby League superstar Jarryd Hayne after getting caught in a riptide at Coogee Beach in Sydney.

The woman was shouting “I can’t do this anymore” before Mr Hayne, who plays for the Parramatta Eels, and his father saved her.
