Hearse power: Bike with a difference for sale as a final ticket to ride

THE highway to Heaven never looked this cool. This bike with a lot of “hearse power” belongs to Peadar Byrne, coach builder and motorbike enthusiast who thought that, for people like himself, it’s the only way to go.

Hearse power: Bike with a difference for sale as a final ticket to ride

Peadar, from Dundalk, Co Louth, has been mad about bikes since he was 15. Then last year, at the age of 47, he decided to combine his biking skills with his job of building coaches and hearses at his father’s business in the town.

“I had been thinking about doing it for a while and it took me about a year to get it finished, working after hours. The body of the hearse is fibre-glass and I used a Yamaha B Max 1200 with it, as it has a water-cooled engine and can easily cope with slow speeds and won’t overheat.”

Peadar has already provided his unique service to bikers and others who expressed a desire to take their final journey in a unique way. Ernie Barrett of Mountjoy Motorcycles, was a well-known motorcycle institution in Dublin and rode his motorcycle up to the age of 84. He passed away at 86 and thanks to Peadar’s unique service he got the chance to ride one final time.

The motorcycle funeral processions have already attracted a lot of interest.

“It’s amazing,” says Peadar. “All along the route, people stop and look, telling me that this is the way they would like to go themselves to their final resting place.

“Even women have been saying it to me that they would like something different when the day comes to make their final journey.”

Now Peadar is putting his hearse up for sale on the website Donedeal.ie as work commitments mean he doesn’t have the time to keep the “sideline” going.

“If I had the time to continue with this, I would love to, but I can’t. I will be sad to see it go, though, as I put my heart and soul into building it.”
