IT seems contradictory to be talking about Seanad elections when both Fine Gael and Labour promised during the election campaign to abolish the upper house of parliament.

But the reality is that the Seanad is going nowhere for the immediate future.

The institution is provided for in the Constitution, meaning a referendum is necessary in order for it to be abolished.
