What’s your motto/advice that you live by?

“Stand up for what you believe in.”

Why did you become a politician?

I was reared in a political family, my father was a TD. He died in 1975 and I went on to win his seat.

Ten years from now where will you be?

In an Ireland which is restored to greatness, which is the best small country in which to do business and where we can live, work, raise our families and grow old with dignity.

Name four guests for your ideal dinner party?

Joan of Arc, Albert Einstein, Muhammed Ali and of course the Boss — Bruce Springsteen.

What are you currently reading?

I don’t have any spare time at the moment, but I am looking forward to reading David McCullagh’s account of John A Costello’s time in office.

What keeps you awake at night?

Well I try to eat well and exercise when I can, so when I hit the bed I usually go out like a light.

What is your funniest political memory?

There are actually too many to recount, maybe someday I will write a book.
