Doomed flight was one of pilot’s first as captain

QUESTIONS surrounding the circumstances of Thursday’s Cork Airport tragedy remained unanswered last night after the mother of a pilot on the doomed flight revealed it was one of her son’s first as captain.

Jordi Lopez’s mother told a Spanish newspaper that her son was an experienced co-pilot but had only taken charge of an aircraft on a few occasions.

“He earned his [captain’s] licence some time ago but had only been exercising this [right] for a few days,” she said.
