Toddler killed and his sister seriously injured in crash
The boy was in the car with his mother and his six-year-old sister when the collision occurred on the N20 at Rockhill Cross, Bruree. All were taken to Mid Western Regional Hospital. The baby boy was pronounced dead in hospital.
The family name has not been released but it is understood that they are from nearby in north Cork. It is believed the men in the other vehicle were from Patrickswell in Co Limerick.
There were three men in the second vehicle and they were taken to the same hospital, where they too were being treated for their injuries.
It is understood their van was towing a trailer of calves.
Bruff gardaí are investigating the collision, which occurred at approximately 4.15pm.
A blue Renault Clio and a white Citroen Berlingo van were involved.
The young girl’s condition was last night described as “critical” while their mother is said to be in a stable condition.
A section of the N20 was closed to traffic early last evening as gardaí completed a forensic examination of the scene.
However, it was reopened to busy Friday night traffic after 10pm.
Rockhill Cross is on the northern side of Charleville, between the town and Rourke’s Cross.
