ESB wants to cut its pay bill by 20% as part of a major restructuring programme designed to make the energy giant more competitive.

The company has confirmed reports first published in Industrial Relations News that it wants to cut €130 million off the total €600m payroll as part an overall cost-cutting drive.

A spokesman said it needs to make the savings “in order to be competitive into the future, sustaining and growing the business”.
