On the market: Players to sell face time to highest bidder

THERE are those who say footballers are in the business of ruining their bodies for the pleasure of strangers but they equally put them to good use off the pitch.

This Saturday night is no exception and what better cause than a children’s charity and a hospice for the terminally ill.

Cork senior football captain Graham Canty is setting a charitable example by putting himself forward for auction in a fundraising event set to benefit Barnardos and Marymount Hospice.

The skipper, who has signed up the majority of his teammates to also take part in the meat mart, said: “It’s a bit of fun and, at the end of the day, it’s all about raising money for two very worthy charities.”

The successful bidders will have the passing pleasure of a chat with their chosen footballer who will also buy them a drink. Photographs and autographs will be thrown in for good measure.

The event, organised by Claire Ryan of Plato Murphy’s Bar on Hanover St, gives those with a fetish for footballers the chance to corner their hero if willing to pay the price.

“With the Cork footballers bringing home the Sam Maguire last September, they are the heroes of the county after a 20-year wait. Now they are showing their true characters as they take the time out before their first league match and give their time to raising money for two worthy charities.”

Entry is €10, and includes free entry into Plato Murphy’s nightclub and, if not already intoxicated by the sight of so many footballers, those who attend can look forward to a complimentary glass of champagne.

“The footballers chose Marymount Hospice and I think it is a cause close to everyone’s heart.

“We chose Barnardos Children’s Charity as this is a great charity with a strong presence in Cork.

“The night itself is organised for everyone to have a good time, a laugh with friends and an opportunity to meet some of the lads,” Ms Ryan added.

Among the footballers whose attendance is confirmed are Paudie Kissane, Ken O’Halloran, Paul O’Flynn, John Hayes, Fintan Goold, Jamie O’Sullivan, Donncha O’Connor, Fiachra Lynch, James Fitzpatrick and Alan Quirke.
