€3k to crush FitzPatrick’s car on election day

ONE lucky punter has won the right to destroy Seán FitzPatrick’s repossessed BMW on the same day as the electorate is expected to do the same to the Fianna Fáil/Greens coalition.

€3k to crush FitzPatrick’s car on election day

The company behind the high-profile public auction of the disgraced banker’s repossessed car, National Recycling, has confirmed it is considering scrapping the 3 series ‘92-registration vehicle on election day.

Bids for the right to press the scrap machine button to destroy the car closed yesterday afternoon, with a winning offer of €3,150 — lower than a €5,200 bid withdrawn at the weekend — announced.

The identity of the person behind the bid for the vehicle, which is in disrepair and would be worth just a fraction of the price if sold on the open market, remains a mystery.

However, National Recycling’s sales manager Conor Hand told the Irish Examiner both his company and RTÉ radio show Mooney Goes Wild — which has helped to organise the auction — were looking forward to meeting the individual on February 18 or 25 to “nama the car”.

The winning eBay bid was placed at 3.55pm on Monday, January 17.

A total of 11 other individuals placed bids in excess of €2,000, while the lowest offers for Mr Fitzpatrick’s vehicle stand at €1.

The car — which now has mould growing in its seats, a busted engine and no NCT — was in the possession of the disgraced banker and his family at Greystones in Co Wicklow.

After it was repossessed and auctioned by the state it came under the control of National Recycling, which removed the vehicle from the premises this month.

After learning the identity of the car’s previous owner, it was decided to auction the vehicle for charity, with all proceeds going to the Samaritans.
