SHANNON Airport could become part of a logistical hub for the transportation of emergency aid to disaster zones.

The proposed development of a global logistics centre for EU-backed humanitarian aid along with an aviation education centre in the Shannon complex are prioritised in a plan to revitalise the airport.

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said the airport had all the necessary infrastructure to facilitate a new centre where emergency food and medical supplies could be stored before they are transported to a disaster zone after a global emergency.
