Off-air DJ Prendeville odds on for Gooseberry award

LAST year ended on a sour note for Neil Prendeville, and now 2011 could be starting with a Gooseberry.

Off-air DJ Prendeville odds on for Gooseberry award

The Cork 96FM presenter, on whom a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for allegedly exposing himself on board an Aer Lingus flight returning from London last year, is odds on to win the Worst Irish Radio DJ of 2010 at tonight’s Gooseberry Awards, to be held in Dublin.

The Corkman faces competition from Gay Byrne and Derek Mooney in the category.

The Gooseberry Awards, which organisers claim is a light-hearted celebration of what is bad in Irish media, lists a host of famous names across a number of categories.

Craig Doyle, Ray Foley and Derek Mooney will contest — if that’s the right word — the category of Worst Irish TV Host, while the Worst Irish Album category is a tussle between Going Back by Tommy Fleming, Insatiable by Nadine Coyle, and Planet Jedward by Jedward.

The Worst Irish Ad of 2010 includes The Apprentice Cadbury’s Ad, Craig Doyle UPC, and former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern’s appearance in a cupboard in an advert for the News of The World.

Mr Ahern is also named in the Worst Irish Journalist category.

Mr Prendeville remains off air at 96FM and yesterday bookmakers Boylesports said the presenter is 4/6 on to win the award.

Cork band Crystal Swing are named in two categories: Worst Irish Single of last year for He Drinks Tequila and Worst Irish Act.

Nicola McGeady, Boylesports PR executive, said: “The spoof award ceremony is all in the name of fun so we hope the celebrities don’t get too offended.”

The Gooseberries are based on online votes from members of the public.

Entry to the ceremony at the Sugar Club in Dublin is free from 7.30pm.
