Energy Minister Eamon Ryan suggested the idea if the national holiday fell in the general election campaign.

He said Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny could visit Germany where his sister party is in power and Labour’s Eamon Gilmore could travel to meet the socialist government in Spain, with the President included in the White House trip.
