POPE BENEDICT XVI has appointed an Irishman as Archbishop of the South African diocese of Pretoria.

Bishop William Slattery, 67, is a member of the Franciscan Order and a native of Portlaoise, Co Laois.

He moves from the diocese of Kokstad.
