Festive treat from soprano and choirs

OPERA fans and Christmas market browsers will be treated to a free festive performance by an award-winning Irish soprano on Cork’s Grand Parade this weekend.

As part of A Cork Christmas Celebration on the Grand Parade, singer Cara O’Sullivan will be providing some festive cheer when she performs a selection of Christmas songs and carols at tomorrow’s concert.

Cara O’Sullivan is one of the country’s top sopranos and her operatic engagements have taken her all over the world, and performances have included the Palau Musica, The O2 Dublin, the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and the Sydney Opera House.

The concert will also include a performance by the gifted singers from the Presentation Secondary School in Ballyphehane who recently won the All-Ireland School Choir Competition.

Despite the icy weather conditions of the past couple of weeks, a Cork Christmas Celebration on the Grand Parade has been attracting very large crowds.

This weekend will see the popular Christmas Markets on the Grand Parade open from 10am-8pm, Santa’s Secret Village in Beamish and Crawford open from 12 noon to 8pm and the illuminated Rockin’ Robin-Themed Winter Wonderland in Bishop Lucey Park open from 4pm-8pm.

A number of choirs will also perform on the Grand Parade for charity over the weekend including The Note Perfect Choir, Cork Music Works, Mayfield Brass Band, Voices of Cork, White Church Community Choir and St Nicholas Brass Band.

A special Christmas colouring competition will also be taking place in the Cork City Central Library at 11.30am today.

- Cara O’Sullivan will be performing from 5pm.
