Even cold feet would not stop this wedding
The happy couple overcame snow, icy roads and transport problems to tie the knot in idyllic winter wonderland surroundings.
As the weather deteriorated in recent days, the couple — from Ferrybank in Waterford city — worried that their long-planned dream wedding at Faithlegg House Hotel would not go ahead.
But with their determination and hard work matched by that of the hotel’s staff and management, they sailed through their nuptials yesterday afternoon.
“We got here in the end and as many people as possible got here so we’re happy now,” Maria said yesterday evening.
Many say preparing for a wedding is nerve-wracking enough at the best of times, but adding the possibility of not getting to your venue to the list doesn’t help.
“It’s quite stressful when there’s something causing a limitation to transport but we only really got worried yesterday.”
The couple and their wedding party arrived by car, four-wheel-drive and even a six-wheel golf course vehicle.
“Everyone who could get here got here.”
To ensure everything could proceed, staff cleared the hotel’s driveway while greenkeepers from the surrounding golf course joined hotel workers in ferrying fresh food to the venue as regular suppliers were unable to make the journey.
The 12 kilometres between Waterford city and Faithlegg are normally negotiated in a matter of minutes but this week’s snow and frost made the road impassable and it took a hefty slice of county council co-operation to get the route gritted in time for yesterday’s ceremony.
The 3.30pm civil ceremony was followed by a reception for the 100 guests. Faithlegg House is one of the FBD group of hotels and marketing manager Deirdre Houlihan revealed they were handing the newlyweds a holiday in their Spanish hotel.
“It may be cold here but at least they’ll get a bit of sun when they travel to Spain,” said Ms Houlihan.
