Accordionist is tourist town’s first ambassador

HE has the reputation of almost being able to make a “squeeze box” talk and is now an ambassador for tourist haven Killarney.

Accordionist is tourist town’s first ambassador

Well-known Irish musician Liam O’Connor was presented with Killarney Town Council’s first ambassadorial award, on Tuesday night, in recognition of his promotion of the town.

A native of Newmarket, Co Cork, the accordionist has lived in Killarney for several years.

His wife, singer Lisa Aherne performs with him and the couple have three children, Saoirse, 11, Oisín, 10, and Cillian, 5.

He has toured internationally several times, has been part of Michael Flatley productions and has played at seven All-Ireland finals in Croke Park.

Speaking at the presentation, Killarney Mayor Donal Grady said Mr O’Connor would continue to promote Killarney through his performances worldwide.

“He started playing music at the age of four and joined the family band at the age of 10. He learned to play 20 instruments, but settled on the ‘squeeze box,’’ Mr O’Grady said.

The fast-fingered musician had undertaken successful tours of America, Scandinavia, Italy and other countries and looked forward to many more, he added.

In reply, Mr O’Connor said he was born into a household where music was part of life and his family was steeped in the Sliabh Luachra tradition

When performing abroad, he said he tried to meet as many members of his audiences as possible and told them about Killarney.

“I also meet thousands of visitors at my performances in Killarney every summer,” he went on. “When I’m away, I always get a warm and positive reaction whenever I mention Killarney.”

Screen legend Maureen O’Hara, who celebrated her 90th birthday this year, was due to attend the presentation but was unable to because of inclement weather.
