THE director general of Engineers Ireland John Power has questioned the wisdom of giving outright water charge waivers to people on social welfare.

It was announced earlier this week that water charges are to be introduced in 2014 for all householders. The installation of water meters is expected to begin next year.

According to the Government’s National Recovery Plan, this will start to reduce Government investment in water services and lead to significant capital expenditure savings.
