THE treatment of returning Irish emigrants who are being denied welfare payments due to the misapplication of a social welfare rule is “unjust and ironic”, an agency which has worked with emigrants since the 1950s has said.

Crosscare said the most vulnerable people who were currently returning home and who are most in need are finding it difficult to find help, some of whom are ending up homeless.

The agency called on the department of Social Protection to examine the issues and improve the situation.
