Kellys tops for holiday claims

‘MARY Kelly’ is most likely to claim for medical expenses on the third day of her August holiday.

A trawl of people who claim on their travel insurance in Ireland has found that people with the surname Kelly, claim more than anyone else. Also the names Mary and John are the most common claimants’ names.

The figures compiled over two years by found that the average cost of a cancellation is €519, while the average claim for medical expenses is €633.

Fiona Butler of said: “The index heralded some quirky findings in which I think people will be very interested. I think it’s also important for people to see what exactly people claim for as it demonstrates the importance of having travel insurance while on holidays.”

On average, people claim €120 for a missed departure and €74 for personal effects.

The most common category for claims is medical expenses while August 20 is the most common day for incidents.

The average age of claimants is 62.

“The average cost of a cancellation totalled €519 which is a significant sum of money. If you are in the unfortunate event of having to cancel your holiday due to an unforeseen illness or bereavement of a family member, you may be able to claim the holiday amount back after spending just a few euro on a travel insurance policy,” said Ms Butler.

Also, a higher percentage of women claim, with women making up 55% of claimants.

David and Margaret were the second most common claimant names while Byrne was the second most common claimant surname. People aged 44 were second most likely to claim followed by those aged 52, 45 and 46.

“Obviously, some elements of this index are a bit tongue-in-cheek and we hope the John and Mary Kellys of Ireland don’t take offence.

“Insurance of any sort is a sometimes a difficult cost to rationalise because the hope is that you will never need to claim on a policy and it is for this reason we believe that people will appreciate learning the various incidents where having a travel insurance policy is vital,” Ms Butler said.
