Turf-cutters to market bog in a bottle

A GROUP of Kerry turf-cutters are planning to bottle the smell of a sod of smouldering turf and export it to Europe and the US.

Yesterday, members of the Iveragh Turf-cutters Co-op were busy readying some 10 tonnes of the black stuff from the vast bogs of Iveragh for shipment to the US in sod form.

The buyer — a US businessman named Peter Baker — is involved in the peat business and in open air food in the US, and his “Sneaky Peak” business specialises in peat flavoured barbecues. Mr Baker, who intends to sell the turf at a premium price, arrived in the town last night to inspect his cargo.
