Gogarty launches foul-mouthed attack online
The Government representative for Dublin Mid-West insulted Twitter users by calling them “stupid”.
Mr Gogarty’s bizarre online rant – which took place yesterday – continued when he referred to Labour’s rise in the latest polls by stating “I don’t give a f*** about Gutless Gilmore”.
But while his party’s plummeting public support would have led to most people in his position immediately rowing back, Mr Gogarty instead told them: “It’s not about the next election, it’s about the next generation stupid!”
“These figures really make you want to borrow Gutless Gilmore’s strategy of saying nothing and promising nothing so damned eloquently.”
Over the next two hours he told half a dozen potential voters who responded to the claim that they were “stupid” or a “fool”, that he doesn’t “give a f***” about the Labour leader.
The rant escalated as the TD said “Sinn Féin play fantasy economics, Fianna Fáil play voodoo economics,” before telling two respondents to “shove it up your cat five cable”.
After apparently realising the difficulty the tweets would cause, Mr Gogarty attempted to say his F-word remark about Mr Gilmore involved the terms “flip” and “flop” and were based on policy differences.
He continued to claim that the “stupid” remarks made simply referred to Bill Clinton’s quote “it’s the economy, stupid” – arguing that anyone who failed to understand this didn’t get “subtlety”.
However, later he told Twitter user @brownscows: “duh, read the context and look up tongue in cheek you cow”.
Labour has refused to rise to Mr Gogarty’s bait.
“We’re going to give him a fool’s pardon,” a spokesperson explained, adding: “Look, it’s Paul Gogarty. What can you say?”
A Green Party spokesperson said Mr Gogarty will not face any official rebuke from the party as he was “interacting with the public” on his “own personal website”.
