A CORK town is set to become a national centre of excellence for the teaching of maths and science as part of a major recession-busting initiative.

Mallow in Co Cork is also set to benefit from a raft of cutting-edge next-generation wireless and medical device research which is being conducted at both Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and University College Cork (UCC).

Key business and community leaders from the region were told at the launch yesterday of the “Mallow: Join the Move” project at the town’s GAA club the Government’s smart economy vision will only be realised if there is a steady supply of well-trained talent, especially people with mathematics, science, engineering and technology skills. The education element of the project will help the country achieve that, they were told.
