Turkish man charged over damage to kebab house

A TURKISH national accused of causing criminal damage to a kebab outlet in Cork city centre was brought before Cork District Court yesterday.

The case followed reports of a three-hour stand-off between gardaí and a man who allegedly had petrol with him at Istanbul, 75 Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork on Thursday night.

Kiyasettin Gungor, 44, was charged by Detective Garda Darragh Murray with an offence under the Criminal Damage Act.

The charge states that on September 23 at Istanbul, 75 Oliver Plunkett Street, Gungor damaged the floor area of the premises belonging to Con Burke and Patrick O’Toole, and did so intentionally or recklessly.

Details of any background to the case were not given in court yesterday.

Inspector Bill Duane applied to have the case adjourned until October 7 so that the prosecution could obtain directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Judge Leo Malone adjourned the case until that date.

There was no state objection to the defendant being remanded on bail until then.

However, there were certain conditions attached to the bail and solicitor Frank Buttimer said there was no objection to those bail terms.

The first condition is that Gungor must stay away from three Istanbul restaurants in Cork city, namely those at 75 Oliver Plunkett Street, 23 Washington Street and 47 John Street.

He must also reside at either of two addresses, one of them at 14 Washington Street, Cork and the other at 12 John’s Avenue, Waterford.

Det Garda Murray said the defendant made no reply when he was charged at 2am yesterday.
