A CONTROVERSIAL new measure introduced by the Department of Environment earlier this month to deter motorists from falsely registering private cars as goods vehicles may be “worthless”.

A revised declaration form for motorists applying to have a private vehicle to be taxed at the cheaper goods rate was introduced in a bid to prevent abuse of the motor tax system.

The RF111A document now obliges applicants to provide details to their local motor tax office that they have a business registered for tax with the Revenue Commissioners. They must fill in their income tax registration number form and have it witnessed by a garda.
